The ERT employees to the 2,000 participants of the World Congress of Philosophy taking place in Athens

The ERT employees to the 2,000 participants of the World Congress of Philosophy taking place in Athens:

OUR DOORS ARE OPEN! COME TO DISCUSS WITH US!

We, the employees of the Greek Public Radio-Television ERT, journalists, technicians and administrative staff, welcome you in Athens and wish all success to the works of your convention in the following week.

At the same time, we remind you, that the Greek government under Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, has shut down our station, on the 11th of June 2013.

The closure was carried out arbitrarily and violating the article 5a of the Greek Constitution, concerning the right to information.

Since then, the Greek population’s information is carried out exclusively by privately owned media.

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU), the press unions in Europe, as well as innumerable personalities of the letters and arts throughout the world have taken a stance against this unprecedented closure.

Still, the government continues breaking the law, refusing today as well, to implement the Council of the State decision of the 17th of June 2013 for the operation anew of the state radio-television broadcaster.

At the same time, it is preparing the operation of a new, as it calls it, “public radio-television”, whose independence collaterals are nonexistent.

We, the employees of ERT, have taken a stance against the closure from the first moment and did what our conscience and employment obligations imposed us: We continued operating the station – on the basis of a unique in radio-television history self-management status.

And this, under the most adverse conditions: Without telephones, which were cut following the government’s order, without wages, and under the constant threat of the violent intervention of police forces to remove us from the ERT premises.

Since then, ERT has got rid of the servility imposed on it since the time of its creation by the various governments and has transformed into a model for public television – free from government and political party dependencies, pluralistic, and open to all people, Greeks and foreigners, living in our country.

Its programmes in the meantime are a model of subject and view pluralism – in the spirit of the categoric order by Jürgen Habermas, for the implementation of the non-violent violence of the best argument.

At the same time, the ERT Building courtyard in Agia Paraskevi has turned into a discussion arena, according to the model of the ancient Athenian Agora, as well as a cultural centre, where every evening the blossom of Greek musical scene performs.

We, the employees of ERT, are attempting to actively realise what you institutionalise in theory: The facets and commandments of the Rationalism.

To this end, we would like to inform you, directly and first-hand, about what we do.

The briefing could be done in a two-way fashion: Either with the participation of ERT delegates in your events (with the consent of the event organisers). Or with your visit, individually or in groups, to the ERT premises in Agia Paraskevi and perhaps, if you wish, with your participation in programmes of the station.

The ideal culmination: Moving one of your events, from the University to the ERT premises and, following that, discussing with the audience in a unique in world records meeting of practical with theoretical Rationalism.

In any case, our doors are open! We would be really delighted if you wished to pass them!

The employees of ERT
