Kostas Sakkas is released under restrictive conditions
Hunger striker Kostas Sakkas has been released under restrictive conditions and a 30.000 euro bail, after a Judicial Council decision. The alleged member of the terrorist organisation “Fire Nuclei Conspiracy”, had remained imprisoned pending trial for 31 months, beyond any legal limit, without being brought to court. Demanding his release, Sakkas has been on a hunger strike for 38 days and, according to the doctors, his health is in critical condition.
Kostas Sakkas’s case has caused the European Commission’s and Amnesty International worry and intense international interest.
In the meantime, Greek Police Department has ordered an administrative investigation after the publication of a video, which depicts police violence against people in solidarity with Kostas Sakkas, during a peaceful rally of theirs, where they demanded his release. The incident took place at midday on Wednesday 10/7 at the Acropolis, where the police took 10 people into custody.
