They are planning to abolish the lesson of Philosophy in Secondary Education
The Panhellenic Philologists’ Union is expressing great concern over the intention to abolish the lesson of Philosophy in Secondary Education. As it is noting in its announcement, in the compilation of the new studies programmes for High School that are being planned, unfortunately, in the absence of the scientific Unions, there is an intention to abolish the lesson of Philosophy in Secondary Education. This lesson, in the best of cases, is appearing as a single-hour per week in the second class of High School.
Denouncing the degradation of Philosophy teaching, in the country that gave birth to philosophical and scientific way of thinking, at the same time when, in many European countries holds an outstanding position, the Panhellenic Philologists’ Union is noting:
Philosophy is not being taught, as a General Education lesson, in High School –an unacceptable fact- and is the only cognitive subject that is presented as a disjunctive choice against Politics and Law, the Panhellenic Philologists’ Union reports.
It also suggested, in order to upgrade the lesson and achieve the objective pursued, the teaching of the lesson both in the third class of Junior High School and in the three classes of High School, as History of Philosophy (Ancient Greek, Medieval of the Byzantium and the West, Modern and Contemporary).
