Tobacco producers say «no» to gold

The tobacco producers of Thrace are “throwing the glove” at gold miners. In an announcement by the Tobacco Producers’ Co-operative of Thrace, they accuse the “Thrace Goldmines S.A.” (“Chryssoryheia Thrakis”) company for immoral and unprofessional behaviour, denounce its stance and declare that they do not consent to research being done in their fields.

More specifically, the announcement runs as follows: “The Tobacco Producers’ Co-operative of Thrace consists only of members that have tobacco farming as their profession and means of livelihood. The Co-operative represents and ceaselessly struggles for the producer’s benefit and interest. Aiming to coordinate ourselves with the views of the rest of Greece’s farming population, we consider it necessary to protest against the steadily repeated method of the “Thrace Goldmines S.A.” gold company. It is our obligation and responsibility to denounce the attitude of the “Thrace Goldmines S.A.” gold company, which does not care for the dire conditions it creates and snubs the ceaseless work and toil farmers give, all year round, in order to secure the bare necessities of life. As Thrace Tobacco Producers’ Co-operative, we condemn and despise this immoral and unprofessional behaviour by the “Thrace Goldmines S.A.” gold company.” And the announcement concludes: “In no way do we accept and in no case do we permit the gold company to do research to our fields, which are very valuable to the farmer”.
