International Solidarity with the ERT Music Ensembles

Their opposition to the "silencing" of the Greek Broadcaster as well as their solidarity to the Music Ensembles of ERT express via their letters, world class orchestras and internationally renowned personalities of music.

During a recent rehearsal with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, the musical director and internationally renowned conductor, Zubin Mehta, expressed his and the orchestra’s support to the musicians of ERT. He cordially wished them to return soon to their work and continue to play "for the people of Greece."

An open letter to the Greek government was sent by the heads of the leading Ensembles of St. Petersburg, the cultural capital of Russia. The text, signed by the artistic director and conductor of the Philharmonic Orchestra of St. Petersburg, Yuri Temirkanov and general manager, artistic director and conductor of opera and ballet theater Mariinsky in St. Petersburg, Valery Gergiev, stated that: "It is surprising that the demands from the European Union to Greece on reducing the number of civil servants are being applied by throwing on the road professionals with the highest of qualifications, who have devoted many years to training and then, as members of the Music Ensembles of ERT played a pivotal role in the cultural life of the country. During the very difficult years of the Second World War and during the recent agonizing years of the birth of a new Russia, never in our country there was even a question of abolishing public cultural ensembles. (...) The destruction of the historic musical ensembles will not solve the economic problems, but will bring a fatal blow to the culture of Greece and its prestige among the civilized countries of the world."

Their support to the Music Ensembles of ERT express with letters of solidarity, among others, the National Symphonic Orchestra of Vienna broadcaster (ORF - Radio Symphonie Orchester Wien), the Belgian Agency ACV Transcom Cultuur, the Slovenian Cultural Organization Kino Šiška Center for Urban Culture, the Symphonic Orchestra of the Broadcasting Corporation of Sweden, the Orchestra of the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation, the Romanian Radio Agency, Cyprus Symphony Orchestra, the Union of Professional Orchestras of Switzerland, the Union of Austrian Choir, the Choir of Cádiz, Spain, the Australian Education Union, the Symphony Chorus of San Francisco and the Philarmonia Orchestra of London.

In addition, many Italian cities organize cultural events for the Music Ensembles of ERT, as in the city of Schio, in Italy, the authorities of which dedicated the Festival of 21 June 2013 - European Music Day in both the orchestras and the choir of ERT. The Music Ensembles of ERT have also received numerous invitations for concerts in cities of the neighboring country.
